German Social Democrats – Kramp-Karrenbauer calls for “consistent state action”
Prior to the exploratory talks with the SPD, Saarland’s Prime Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer (CDU) called for a consistent line in refugee policy.
Saarbrücken – “Immigration and integration are above all about consistent state action, for example when it comes to deportations,” said Kramp-Karrenbauer of the “Welt”. CDU and CSU would therefore have to “defend their position on immigration and implement it in the coalition talks with the SPD as possible”.
CDU and CSU had agreed after the federal election on a common line in refugee policy, which was already their basis for the failed negotiations with the FDP and the Greens on a Jamaican coalition. They argue that no more than 200,000 people should be received in Germany each year. In addition, the list of safe countries of origin should at least be extended to the Maghreb states, the controls at the German borders should be extended.
Family reunification for refugees with limited subsidiary protection status should be suspended. In addition, the Union wants to bundle asylum procedures for all new arrivals in “decision-making and return centers”. Asylum seekers have to stay there until their application has been decided.
On January 7, the Union and SPD begin their explorations on forming a government. Refugee policy should play a crucial role in this. A new edition of the grand coalition is highly controversial in the ranks of the Social Democrats.
A new grand coalition must come in immigration policy to “real improvements,” demanded Kramp-Karrenbauer, who participates for their party in the talks with the SPD. “Someone who has veiled his identity or destroyed papers, must expect harsh consequences,” demanded the CDU politician. “For unaccompanied minors, a mandatory age test should be introduced.”
