Fresno State joined the play with a total of 9-4 (7-1 in conference) and had the third best record in the Mountain West Conference. The Bulldogs are taking 17-14 days to lose Boise State in the Mountain West Conference game on Dec. 2. One week before the match, Fresno State beat Boise State, 28-17.
On the other hand, Houston ended the regular season with a total of 7-4 (5-3 in conference) and with the fourth best overall record among all teams in the American Sports Conference. In their final match, the Corps defeated the Navy, 24-14, on November 24.
The Hawai’i Bowl, or simply the Hawaii Bowl, has been played annually since 2002 at the Aloha Stadium in Halawa, Hawaii.
Hawaii Volleyball is not the first bowl game to play in Hawaii. The Hawaii Bowl was successful with the Poi Bowl (1936-39), the Pineapple Bowl (1940-41, 1947-52), the Aloha Bowl (1982-2000), and the Oahu Bowl (1998-2000), but not related to bowls.
The game is typically a matchup between a team from the US Conference and a team from the MWC. However, teams from other conferences, such as Pac-12 and USA, are also considered if they qualify. Also, if Hawai’i football qualifies for bowl matches, they will have an automatic bid to play in the game.
This year’s games feature The American and MWC, as Houston and Fresno State will play in turn. Fresno State will be playing in the Hawaii Bowl for the third time, where it went 0-2, while Houston will be playing in the game for the second time, where it went 0-1.
In the Hawai’i Bowl last year, Hawai’i beat Middle Tennessee, 52-35, on Christmas Eve. Dru’s Hawai’i Empire and Middle Tennessee receiver Richie James won the MVP award for the match.
Fresno State will play in the first game since 2014, where they lost to Rice, 30-6 at the Hawaii Bowl. Houston played in a bowl game last season, but lost to San Diego State, 34-10, in the Las Vegas Bowl.
Houston‘s offense will take a hard test in the face of Fresno State’s defense. Houston’s offense largely depends on the position of midfielder D’Eriq King, who poses a threat to both hands and feet. Throughout the air this season, King threw for 991 yards with six punches and had only one stoppage while completing 69.8% of his passes. On the ground, the king ran for 341 yards and eight times touched 63 cars.
Fresno State will consider the quarterback to have a great game as well. Marcus McMaryion completed 61.1% of his passes this season with 2,384 yards and 14 touchdowns against four interceptions. In addition, the masters will rely on their game, as they have three runners to rush for more than 450 meters in the season – Jordan Mims (609), Josh Hokit (519) and Ronnie Rivers (473).
