A Femen burst on Monday, topless, in the giant nativity scene of Vatican St. Peter’s Square.
The Christmas festivities in the Vatican were disrupted on Sunday and Monday by the Femen movement. On December 25, an activist was arrested by the police on St. Peter’s Square (Rome) as she seized the santon of the baby Jesus placed in the Christmas nativity scene.
“God is woman,” she said, topless, after jumping over the barriers. The facts took place around 10 am, two hours before the blessing “Urbi et orbi” of Pope Francis pronounced from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica in front of 50,000 people.
The day before, two Femen activists had, they, managed to pose in front of the Nativity. On their bodies was painted the inscription “#Me Too: Assaulted By Church” (“#Me also: assaulted by the church,” ed.). Posing as “a free and modern virgin Mary”, they expressed their opposition to “patriarchal religious institutions and their aggressive and oppressive practices towards women,” activist Inna Shevchenko, a leader of this group.
The Femen movement, born in Ukraine and opposed by topless actions to the former pro-Kremlin regime, to Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Orthodox Church, has spread to Western Europe, where it has also attacks the Catholic Church, which he accuses of being retrograde in the field of women’s rights.
In the line of #MeToo
Inna Shevchenko called for continuing the global movement of speech liberation born after the revelation of the Weinstein scandal.
“The #MeToo hashtag has been a revolution. It allowed women to express themselves freely. He demonstrated that together we could change the world. It has raised a collective awareness about the sexual violence that women experience every day. Mary urged us not to stop there and continue to denounce all forms of violence against women, “added Inna Shevchenko.
On December 25, 2014, another activist of the movement managed to carry the santon before being arrested. Its purpose was to protest against the Church’s opposition to abortion and free union.
